This presentation will present results from an ongoing scholarship of teaching and learning project conducted in multiple instances of Introduction to Geographic Information Science (Intro GIS) courses. These courses, taught in various modalities at UMass - Amherst and Texas A&M, provide insights not only into how students learn GIS, but also how instructors handle GIS teaching, troubleshooting, pedagogy, and curriculum. Reporting results directly from student performance, student surveys, and instructor reflections, this session will share insights into what works, and what doesn't, in terms of GIS instruction. Further reflections on COVID impacts on teaching will be shared as well.
