Geospatial Strategic Planning Matters

As new geospatial technology platforms rapidly emerge, organizations must evolve quickly, embrace change, and be prepared to meet the needs of their constituents and stakeholders. A strategic plan is an essential component of any successful GIS organization as it articulates the vision that will carry the organization forward, prioritize activities and investments, and define the most important goals along the way. The value is not only in the plan, but in the planning process itself as it engages stakeholders in ideation and prompts important discourse. A Strategic Plan may also lead to the need for more in-depth Business Plans to define how to tactically achieve the goals in the Strategic Plan. AppGeo has recently completed Strategic Plans for the state GIS offices of Utah, Georgia, Indiana, and Montana, and as well as one underway with Michigan. This presentation will give an overview of these projects - the processes, the differences, the results - to help inform your next strategic planning project.
